What are Guished pop-ups?

Guished popups are a consequence of adware presence. Adware is a sort of malware that shows you the pay-per-view of pay-per-click ads, which creates a substantial volume of profit for adware distributors. These promotions might include sometimes shocking information, or have a web link to malevolent content/website, since adware maintainers have no reason to check the goodness of the material they are going to reveal – their solitary target is money.

Pop-up advertising itself is an excellent, low-cost and extremely successful marketing method1. It permits the seller to link the customers’ interest to their site, as well as the customers to get the dynamic updates on the goods they intend to buy. When the customer will get a pop-up notification that the TV set he likes to purchase is available at the online store he/she saw previously with a 15% price cut, one will definitely use this opportunity and get it. Considering the extremely small cost for the popups and their targeting, such an advertising and marketing instrument is a much-loved thing amongst the marketing teams of big internet retail stores.

Nonetheless, such a successful system could not be missed by malware creators. Potential to demonstrate the popup ads forcibly to the victims of malware invasion is an excellent basis for malicious manipulations with the popup ads. And Guished.com promotions is one of hundreds that are “employed” in this scheme.

How have I got the Guished virus?

There are a plenty of methods of getting infected by the adware that trigger the Guished popups tornado. A lion’s part of this computer virus cases is after the freeware or cracked programs, that are spread on the peering networks. Free software may also be downloaded from the main site, and the adware is provided as a legal bundled program.

There is no need to blame yourself. A number of individuals regularly work with the uncertain programs from untrusted sources: abandonware, different tools that are free, or even hacked programs. Every one of these types of applications are risky, because it is quite easy to include a Guished malware under the cover of part of the license hacking script, or as a component of the self-made algoritm inside of the Windows optimization tool.

Guished popup malware may additionally be concealed in the ad somewhere on the unusual website. Such websites are typically filled with colorful and blinking advertisements, and their proprietors often permit any kind of promotions to be published on their web page. Thus, clicking on such banners is a risky thing: only the advertisement contractor realizes what will occur when you press this advertisement. Besides some “light” viruses, like adware or undesirable programs, you may additionally receive something a lot more unsafe, like ransomware or coin miner; the large share of coin miners distribution is exactly after the malicious advertisements.

People dislike popups

The statistic shows that people dislike popup advertising more than other types of promotions

Potentially undesirable applications, like Guished popup virus may cause a lot of different problems on your PC. Distracting is not the only problem – pop-up notifications may display you the advertisements, where you are offered to get one more unknown application, or “a amazing security tool”. Scareware is often distributed with the use of the last slogun. Potentially unwanted applications, in turn, can have spyware functions. And it is very hard to distinguish the unwanted app from a normal one, if you don’t know the exact names. Besides the potentially unwanted programs and dubious antiviruses, popup-related promotions are also exploited as a distribution method by different trojan viruses, for instance – coin miners. The consequences of actions of such viruses is 100% unpleasant, and can cost you several hundreds of dollars. And even if you are not tapping these ads, they may be clicked by whoever who also uses your PC – parents, children, spouse, etc. So the things can become much more serious, and it will be much harder to solve it without information loss. It is recommended to get rid of the viruses with anti-malware programs as soon as possible.

How can I get rid of Guished pop-up advertisements?

The guide of Guished adware removal includes 2 parts. Initially, we need to eliminate the malware, and then repair the results of its activity. The removal task is very simple, since it can be performed even with the use of Microsoft Defender – anti-malware software that is present on all computers with Windows 8/10. Nonetheless, as a result of its huge resources usage, along with some problems that may be critical for some groups of individuals, Defender is often turned off by the users, so its utilization is probably impossible. In addition, a variety of trojan viruses are capable to shut off the embedded antivirus. It is better to make use of the separated program that will not have such weakness.

I’d advise you to utilize Gridinsoft Anti-Malware2 – a well-proven antivirus tool that will surely wipe out the malware from your system and create an invulnerable shield with a Proactive protection function. But let’s handle Guished adware first.

When the browsers are reset, you need to make sure that your browser will definitely connect the accurate DNS while connecting to the site you need. Make a text file named “hosts” on your desktop, then open it and fill it with the following lines3:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Find the hosts.txt file in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. Rename this file to “hosts.old.txt” (to distinguish it from the new one), and then move the file you created on the desktop to this folder. Remove the hosts.old from this folder. Now you have your hosts file as good as new.

However, there is one trouble that makes things much harder to fix, particularly without the anti-malware software. A lot of adware versions that are utilized to show you the Guished pop-up ads are modifying the deep browser settings, disabling an access to the settings tab. So, if you try to change your browser settings after your PC was penetrated by pop-up-related malware, your browser will crash quickly. In some cases, you will see no crash, but significant lag spike after pressing the “settings” key. Browser will stop reacting for ~ 30 seconds, and then it will be back to the typical, up until you attempt to open settings once more.
